Brigadier General Frank Baldwin & Major General Adna Chaffee

This photo was taken of Baldwin in 1902, just after his promotion from Colonel and two months after the Battle of Bayan. Baldwin was a rare individual and national hero, one of only nineteen recipients to have been awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor twice; first during the Civil War and then in 1874 in an action against the Cheyenne Indians. Few doubted his courage or pugnacity, but against the Moros his judgment proved seriously flawed. General Chaffee realized he had to rein in his fellow cavalryman while avoiding the humiliation of his replacement. He did so by placing a junior officer, Captain Pershing, as Baldwin's "minder, despite howls of protest from other officers.
